Pink Lakes

Steve Back's photographs of delicately colored lakes look like photographs of an alien planet or at least imaginative oil paintings instead of the aerial documentation of nature's beauty that they are. Australia serves as his home and the inspiration for his work. A different perspective would make his "pink lake" series of the Hutt Lagoon seem more ordinary, but Back's careful composition of each image crops and reveals the naturally occurring colors and patterns in such a way to add to their mystery. It's a type of algae that gives the lagoon its unique coloring, similarly to the way that flamingos' feathers are dyed by their diet.
